Is a Deck or a Patio better suited for your home?

Homeowners often find themselves at sixes and sevens when it comes to renovating their outdoor living spaces. People who live in areas that experience hot weather will undoubtedly favour a pool. A private pool on your property can be ideal for relaxing on hot summer days. People with kids will usually opt for a lawn. This would give their children ample room for playing outdoors.

Some homeowners succumb to the charms of having an outdoor kitchen. Contrary to popular perception, outdoor kitchens do not necessarily need to come into play solely for barbecues. With a seating area, you could make your outdoor kitchen a place where you entertain your visitors on days of fine weather too.

Choosing between patios and decks is not easy. Both the structures offer their own merits and characteristics. Both are easy to customise. You can add certain built-in features such as barbecues and firepits to both patios and decks with minimal fuss. Interestingly, you could incorporate these features at any time too. For instance, you could add these elements at the time you build the structure or include them as additions subsequently.

When it comes to decks, wood has long been the material of choice. In recent times, PVC and composite decks have been making their presence felt. Decks made of PVC and composite materials can exude a fresh and modern look. At the same time, they can offer the finish of wood, without needing much by way of maintenance.

Local builders believe that if the house stands on uneven ground, it is best to construct a deck. This is because a patio will require a level foundation. As such, your builders will need to construct a level foundation for the patio, before they even commence work on the patio. Naturally, this will be expensive. In fact, the cost of building the foundation could well exceed the cost of building the patio itself.

Similarly, if your home provides you with a great view, consider plumping for a raised deck. A raised deck will capitalise on the view and provide you with an overlook. On the other hand, if you have an in-ground pool, a patio could be your best bet. This is because builders can construct the patio around the pool. Such an arrangement would provide you with ample space for grilling outdoors or drying yourself, even as your friends or family members relax in the pool.
